19 Iron Uses in Different Industries (Need To Know Facts!)

Iron (Fe) is the most common element on earth and is used in different fields like:

Iron oxide uses

Iron oxide is composed of iron and oxygen. Most iron ores are present initially in the form of iron oxides. The important uses of iron oxide are listed below:

  • Iron oxides are used in the making of alloys that should contain iron.
  • Iron oxides are used for pigmentation and can give colours like red, black and yellow which are inexpensive and permanent.
  • Iron oxides are capable of increasing the rate of reaction by acting as catalysts.

Iron ore uses

Iron ores are the minerals and rocks from which iron is extracted through different processes. Most of the iron ores are iron oxides. Iron ores are used in the ways listed here:

  • Most of the iron ore (about 98%) is used to make steel and steel alloys.
  • The left percentage of iron ore is used in making inks, catalysts and giving blue colour in paints.

White cast iron uses

White cast iron is obtained when the carbon does not form graphite in solution form. It may be invented my mistake but today has several important uses as mentioned below:

  • White cast iron is very brittle, which is why it is used in making ball mills, extrusion nozzles and cement mixers where it would not break easily due to its brittle nature.
  • White cast iron is also used in pipe fittings, pump impellers and crushers.

Carbonyl iron uses

Carbonyl iron is one of the purest forms of iron prepared from iron pentacarbonyls. It is composed of spherical microparticles with having grey appearance. The uses of carbonyl iron are given below:

  • Carbonyl iron is used in electronics to make magnetic cores of high-frequency coils used in industries.
  • Carbonyl iron is used for broadband inductors being highly stable in a wide range of temperatures.

Wrought iron uses

Wrought iron is an alloy of iron that contains less percentage of carbon when compared to cast iron. It has ductility and corrosion-resistive properties. Some important uses of wrought iron are:

  • Wrought iron is used in the gate and fencing industries, due to high ductility and corrosion-resistive properties.
  • Wrought iron is widely used in home décors like tables, pots stand, bakers racks and wine racks.

Soldering iron uses

Soldering iron is a tool used in the soldering process. Its uses are as follows:

  • Soldering Iron is mostly used for repairs, installations and other works that require limited soldering through electrical supply.

Pig iron uses

Pig iron is a crude profile of cast iron which is obtained as an intermediate during the production of steel. It has only some limited applications which are as follows.

  • In modern iron plants, pig iron is melted and then fed in ladles for castings of pigs or pig-iron of small size for reuse or resale. The smaller versions of pig iron are called piglets.

Cast iron uses

Cast iron is formed by combining iron and carbon with a carbon percentage of 2% or more. It is known for its low melting point temperature. Some of the uses of cast iron are listed below:

  • Because of good strength and ductility, cast iron is used for electrical fittings, hand tools, washers, brackets and machine parts.
  • Cast Iron plays an important role in cookware and is used to make waffle iron, ovens, karahi, woks, frying pans and deep fryers.
