Magnesium hydride is one type of hydride where hydrogen gets attached to an alkaline earth metal like magnesium. The chemical formula of magnesium hydride is MgH2.

- Magnesium hydride is used a good source for hydrogen storage.
- The low density and reactivity of magnesium hydride facilitates to exhibit this property.
- Magnesium hydride is also used to produce hydrogen gas.
- When treated with water, MgH2 decomposes to give hydrogen gas.
- MgH2 + H2O ——–> 2H2 + Mg(OH)2
Energy storage system
Magnesium hydride is used as a thermal energy storage system because during hydrogenation -dehydrogenation process, it can retain with high enthalpy.

Magnesium is an abundant metal on earth with some unique properties. Some hydrides are used as good reducing agent. Magnesium hydride is a crystalline solid substance which gets decomposed in water.
